Nursery Schools

One of the programs of child welfare we are working in hand with the private development agency is to assist in the creation of about 50 nursery schools across the division. More than 40 of them are already operational mostly under the care of the community led by women. This program was started in 1999 but we joint in as partners in 2003 for we saw it as a good community initiative.

These schools are called LIWONG (in our dialect lamnso), which means child care to take care of children from 1.6 years and above who have not reached primary school age. These centres care for kids to allow their parents go for other activities  such as farming and also allow their elder brothers or sisters whose jobs where to look after this children to be able to continue their studies. Common child health epidemics are avoided when they are under this strict control or quickly identified and safely handled. Hence we try to mould children up while still very young. We have had many International volunteers through American peace corps etc coming to assist this program train some of the staff since they don't require much education to handle these kids.
